COSMIC ROOTS. A STUDY. // Festival Edit

In the summer of 2021 I was asked to come along to Cosmic Roots Festival to photograph and shoot the weekend. So I took along a bunch of cameras to a field in the middle of Norfolk and tried my best to capture the energy of the unique little festival.

I wanted to use a mix of high quality recording and lo-fi camcorder footage to achieve the scale, colour, and vibrancy of the nights while also trying to capture a sense of that unique intimacy and shared feeling that runs through a community of 1000 or so people penned into this new little world for three summer sun days.

While the festival leant heavily into the garage, house, and techno scene I found myself drawn to ‘The Pond’; a comparatively small stage cloaked in a low hanging tent and a permanent mist of incense smoke. Here DJs experimented with more worldly music and drew a dedicated crowd of fans who swayed among palm fronds in front of the vinyl decks or draped themselves over the poufs and vintage sofas lining the back of the open tent.

So instead of chosing a more housey, heavy track for this edit I moved more toward that world music vibe. It’s mix of chill beats, chanting vocals, and chattering drums bringing me straight back to those long nights at this wonderful little festival.
